Unlocking Potential #OneTeam: Kate Nelhams
Kate Nelhams is a Project Administration Officer, working for the UP Operations Team. Find out more about her day-to-day and the joy of an electric paint stripper!
Kate, what is your role at UP, in a nutshell?
I work as Project Administration Officer, a role which is part of the office-based Operations Team. Together, we provide the backbone of administrative and finance support to the wider team, across the programmes. Although we’re not client-facing, it’s still an essential component of the programme delivery. We keep things ticking along in the background, making sure that systems and processes are working as smoothly and efficiently as they can be. We’re also responsible for payments, which is probably the most important thing!
What do you most enjoy about working with UP?
I’m very lucky to be a part of such a supportive team – there’s a lot of hard work which goes on, but a lot of laughter, too. I also get to see the huge diversity of businesses in Cornwall and be a part of supporting them to achieve success.
How do you stay inspired?
So many things help me to stay inspired – great books, beautiful landscapes, food! I love exploring new places and trying new things, whether it’s hiking to a remote spot in the wilderness and feeling like I’m completely away from it all, or seeking out a new café or restaurant with something weird and wonderful on the menu that I haven’t seen before.
If you could live in a TV programme what would it be and why?
This a tricky question to answer, as all my favourite TV shows probably aren’t ones I’d want to live in – I’m not sure I’d last long in an episode of Black Mirror or American Horror Story! I’d probably choose something like Westworld, where there was adventure tinged with a bit of jeopardy, but not quite such a high chance of death and/or certain misery!
What’s in your pocket right now?
Generally, I don’t keep much in my pockets, especially at work… Outside of work, any random odds and ends which don’t have a home elsewhere tend to end up in my pockets – it’s always a good place to start looking when I need a spare bolt, washer, screw, hinge, tape measure or other bit of DIY detritus.
Best gift you’ve ever been given?
I’m not really a gifts person, but sticking to the DIY theme (and probably not everyone’s idea of a best present ever!) my other half once bought me an electric paint stripper. After 3 weeks trying to strip 50 years’ worth of paint from every door, doorframe and bannister in the house with chemical paint stripper and a pallet knife, I was (genuinely) beyond ecstatic. That, and I always appreciate a good bottle of Gin…
