From being your own boss to being The Boss
Andrew Stone and his award-winning business, Oracle Design, were at something of a crossroads, and Andrew knew it.
Oracle Design offer brand, design for print, web and digital design. The agency has been running for over 12 years in Newquay. Andrew began the business in 2008, offering branding, logos, all design for print, such as brochures, signs and packaging, but as digital’s importance grew, so did Oracle’s team, which embraced web design and development and also encompassed illustration and animation.
Andrew offered these services via trusted collaborators, and until recently this model remained: managing a team of sub-contractors working with him directly in the office.
On the upside, this offered him complete control and in turn, gave the client a great team of experience and high level of work. As Oracle supplies some of the biggest businesses in the south west, this was important to Andrew’s ethos. On the downside, Andrew found he had reached full capacity with current sub-contractors and there was a sense of stagnation, of having to turn work away, and hit the ceiling in terms of profit.
InFocus changed that:
The whole thing was really great”, says Andrew. Lucy, my Business Development Manager, has been amazing from start to finish. She helped me take a step back and focus on areas of the business to develop and improve.
Andrew had never employed before. It was a big decision and a leap of faith. Lucy didn’t just help write the job ad and screen the 30+ applications via UP Jobs, she sat in on the interviews. Andrew could assess candidates as regards their skills; her expertise extended to their overall fit.
In spite of this, Andrew’s clear that, crucial as it was to become an employer, InFocus offered plenty more.
I met with a lot of the team, who all had valuable advice which I have taken away. Finance, marketing, sales, things I hadn’t had time to think about.
This element of having (and taking) time recurs. Andrew had never been able to stand back and think about anything other than the next job. Now that InFocus has given him the practice, and Covid the time, he’s decided to stop renting office space after seven years, and to invest in new-build premises instead.
He’s also looking at taking on his second employee to add to the wider team of contractors. With an ever-growing client base and enthusiastic team members. We’re looking forward to where the future takes us.
Meanwhile, he’s unequivocal about InFocus:
It’s an excellent support organisation, which has greatly impacted key business decisions for Oracle. I would highly recommend reaching out for the expertise and guidance provided.
