Future Focus Success Story:
Skinflint

Future Focus grant helps Skinflint embed sustainability into their business.

Future Focus business grant support leads to launch of new scheme

Breathing new life into old industrial lights, wasn’t enough for Sophie and Chris Miller, their passion for sustainability flicked the switch, creating another ‘lightbulb’ moment.

Skinflint scours locations across the world to source and restore unique and historic vintage lights, manufactured in the era from 1920 – 1970. The reclaimed vintage lights are all unique pieces, ranging from Hungarian railway ceiling lights and German cargo ship wall lights, to Eastern Bloc machinists table lights and Czech pendants. Every vintage light is reclaimed and restored by UK-based lighting experts and the provenance of the light documented. Watch their story.

As well as offering a lifetime guarantee that includes lighting repairs, Chris and Sophie have launched their ‘Full Circle buy-back scheme’ to deepen their passion and commitment to sustainability.

Chris says:

Full Circle provides clients with the opportunity to trade-in their old Skinflint lights in exchange for 50% credit towards a future purchase. Returned lights are then repaired, restored and recertified and placed back into the market. This is our commitment to sustainability – keeping lights out of landfill and in use forever.

With grant support from the Future Focus programme, Chris and Sophie commissioned an animation to show the benefit of the Full Circle scheme, demonstrating its importance and fit within the circular economy.

The animation is an effective tool to introduce Skinflint to new clients and the new Full Circle buy back scheme to our existing client base. The animation has been greeted well and has been welcomed by our clients.

Chris and Sophie are now going one step further in their promise towards sustainability and are currently in the process of becoming BCorp certified with a supporting business grant from InFocus.

Chris explains:

Our company is inherently grounded in sustainability through the product it retails, the process of becoming BCorp certified will ensure we completely close the loop and meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit with purpose.

What does 2021 look like for Skinflint?

With 2020 being an unavoidably turbulent year for most businesses, Skinflint remain hopeful towards a positive, more predictable and sustainably focused start to 2021.

We never know what really lies ahead in life or business (Although we convince ourselves we do a lot of the time!). Becoming BCorp certified is a timely and stringent process that will consume our time during the start of 2021. We are also spending time changing our digital management systems, improving areas such as stock control and client management.
