Future Focus Success Story: Skinflint Design

Future Focus Success Story: skinflint Design

Skinflint Design is the UK’s leading vintage industrial lighting company. Skinflint scours locations across the world to source and restore unique and historic vintage lights; manufactured in the era from 1920 to 1970, and originally utilised in a wide variety of industrial environments.

The reclaimed vintage lights are all unique pieces, ranging from Hungarian railway ceiling lights and German cargo ship wall lights, to Eastern Bloc machinists table lights and Czech pendants. Every vintage light is reclaimed and restored by UK-based lighting experts and the provenance of the light documented.  The company sells via its website to a both private clients, as well as the commercial sector.

Set in up 2009 and based in Penryn, the company now employs 9 people.  Having received support through the Unlocking Cornish Potential Project to recruit their first employee, they continued to keep in touch with the team.

Future Focus has helped them to recruit Sarah into a graduate position supporting the company’s PR and marketing effort.  Initially helping with the recruitment process, Future Focus then continued to provide mentoring and training support to Sarah, which has included training sessions on:

  • Branding and PR
  • Email marketing and GDPR

Both of these training opportunities have directly influenced the company’s approach to marketing.  The branding and PR training involved working with skinflint and 16 other Cornish businesses to hone their brands and USPs, with sessions in Cornwall run by Lucy Jenner Brown (PR specialist) as well as a ‘Cornish Brand Day’ in London to meet journalists.  The support has helped Sarah to develop the company’s PR strategy and as a result, they are now much more confident in their approach and have brought the PR function in house. Whilst so far this has not led to direct coverage of the brand, Sarah now has a direct relationship with journalists, who she has met and who know the business. They are confident that this more personal approach, based on quality not quantity will yield results in time.

Equally, the email marketing and GDPR support was very timely and helped the business prepare for the GDPR changes, as well as developing an understanding of campaign marketing.  As a result, Sarah has put the theory into practice, cleansing the database from a GDPR perspective as well as segmenting it.  They are now seeing a greater level of engagement with their email communications with a smaller number of contacts.

More widely, Future Focus has been a great source of support for the whole company, with Sophie, the company’s Director highlighting that as the Future Focus team knows and understands their business, their offer is always targeted to their needs. In Sophie’s words:

They know us so well, they offer us things that would not otherwise have been possible
