Future Focus Success Story: Green&Blue
Set up by husband and wife team Kate and Gavin Christman in 2005, the team established Green&Blue to design beautiful, stylish products that help wildlife. Based in Perranporth, the company has grown significantly and now employs six people.
Believing passionately that every new house needs to provide a home for wildlife, the team have designed, created and innovated a range of unique products that can be used on a stand–alone basis in gardens (e.g. the bird ball) or as part of a construction project (e.g. a bee brick).
Faye, the company’s sales and marketing manager heard about Future Focus when they came across the ‘People, Planet, Profit’ event at the Eden Project in Feb 2018. Both Faye and Gavin attended the event as it seemed to perfectly align with their business strategy, speaking to their values and passion for sustainability. The event certainly lived up to their expectations and they both came away inspired and ‘fired-up’ to take action. At the event they heard from another Cornish business who had become the 3rd certified ‘B Corp’ Business in Cornwall. B Corporations (or B Corps) are a growing group of companies who are reinventing business, by pursuing purpose as well as profit. Having heard their story, Gavin and Faye knew straight away that they too needed to become certified.
Following the People, Planet, Profit event they started the certification process. This was aided by an evening Future Focus workshop session, specifically aiming to help businesses to achieve B Corp Certification. This provided practical tips and helped to answer some of their early questions. In November 2018, they became the 4th Cornish business to achieve B Corp certification. This process has really helped to shape the business as it has grown and given it a real sense of purpose –significantly contributing to the growth of the business.
In addition, the company has benefited from a number of other labs and trips, including the media relations and planning lab and the Cornish Businesses Press Open Day trip to London. Both of these have helped to develop the marketing strategy as well as creating lasting connections with journalists in magazines such as Coast, Country Living and House and Garden, which have featured Green&Blue products. In Faye’s words:
“It is really valuable to be table to take time out to think about a strategy, not just tying to get some press coverage”
Involvement with Future Focus has also helped them to make connections with other brilliant Cornish businesses, which have been sustained after the trip in the form of a Whatapp group – an unexpected benefit of the process.
Overall, Future Focus has made a significant contribution to the growth of the business, helping to shape its direction and how to get there. Without support it is unlikely that they would be as far along the journey or the journey have been so smooth. In Faye’s words:
“We have engaged with quite a few programmes and Future Focus has had the most impact and been the most inspirational”
