Future Focus supports Codices with recruitment and skills development
Recruiting: Making it seamless, smooth and straightforward
Effective recruitment is tricky at the best of times. If you’re a start-up, still securing funding, and balancing priorities during a pandemic, it’s more than tricky.
For Codices, one of England’s Top 50 creative companies, who develop next generation live interactive video, Unlocking Potential turned recruitment into a positive experience.
In Spring 2020, their now Head of Content, Paul Hurley, was doing a couple of days’ consultancy a month for the embryonic company. Aside from their CEO, Tim Edwards, and a few other full-timers, this was how things had to be while seed-funding was raised which would allow for proper planning.
Tim and Paul met Business Development Manager, Katie Moore from Future Focus in April; she told them how she could help with the initial search, as well as the continuing, post-recruitment mentoring and development. They liked the sound of this, but it was even better in practice.
I particularly liked how we didn’t have to go through all those traditional routes, the usual job sites, where you end up with 1,000 people applying, and maybe 10% are relevant. Future Focus have their own way of doing things, which made everything much easier. We probably had between 80 and 120 applicants, and about 80% of them were in some way relevant. It was one of the more enjoyable recruitment processes I’ve known.
Codices secured their funding and Paul became its full-time Head of Content in early July, by the end of which Sarah Price, a recent graduate, was taken on as Junior Content Manager.
Sarah completed her probationary period in November and still benefits from Katie’s input, as does Paul. The three of them recently asked “What skills would it benefit Sarah and Codices for her to improve?” The answer was video editing, an important part of her role.
Future Focus made sure to welcome me and make sure I knew who I could talk to as soon as I started at Codices. I’ve spoken to Katie throughout the process, and she has been a positive and patient presence … I feel like she really wants to help me make the most of the opportunities I have both at Codices and with the support programme too.
For Paul, having Future Focus help a team member to add to her skills is amazing, but it’s also a natural continuation of the help Codices have had from them throughout their collaboration.
