Breakthrough: What happened after the Breakthrough workshop?
National growth for Bad Wolf Horizon
Bad Wolf Horizon Ltd is a multi award-winning drone company, based in Cornwall, specialising in drone video, virtual drone tours and “first-person-view” drone filming.
Tom founded Bad Wolf Horizon Ltd. in August 2017. Having a strong background in film production and aerial photography meant that from the start, he wanted to be more than just “a drone pilot.” Thinking creatively about how drones could be used for film, TV and business promotion, his aim was to take the drone revolution to new heights. Literally.
In his first few years of trading Tom won “Young Businessperson of the Year” from the Western Morning News, “Best Digital Innovation in Tourism” at the Cornwall Live EDGE Awards as well as being in the class of 2020, Cornwall’s 30 Under 30.
Tom had been running his business for 18 months when he decided to attend the Breakthrough Workshop for a second time.
I needed a refresher; to make sure I was doing the right thing and to see if there was anything I was overlooking. Being at the workshop and talking about my business, getting it down onto paper, helped me come up with a plan of how the business could develop over coming months.
Bad Wolf Horizon celebrates national growth
Now, three years on, Tom has worked with big names including Amazon, Ford, The National Trust and NatWest, to name just a few. His aerial filming expeditions have taken him across the UK and abroad, but when at home in Cornwall, Tom works out of his unique fully converted container office space in Helston.
As the drone industry continues to evolve, Tom has continuously adapted, to move with the times, being adaptable, which is something that he learnt early on from the Breakthrough Workshops. In 2021, Tom is now regarded as one of the best FPV drone pilots in the UK – a fast growing area within the film industry.
As we approach the tail end of our fourth-year trading, it’s good to look back on how far we’ve come. It hasn’t always been easy; the multiple occasions where I nearly ran out of money, the long nights and aggressively early starts, the never-ending website updates and continuous juggling act of running a business, all while keeping clients happy.
Breakthrough laid foundations for business growth
Now Bad Wolf Horizon are busier than ever, “but that doesn’t mean that my problems are any easier – just more complicated!” reports Tom. He explains how the Breakthrough Workshop gave him the foundations upon which to grow his business, supporting him with collaborations, project management and future planning.
Starting a business isn’t easy, but if you love what you do and are willing to work for it, then it is worth every minute of hardship. I would highly recommend the Breakthrough Programme to anyone who is interested in learning more about starting a business, how to further develop your ideas, or even just to meet likeminded people.
